Disability and its effect on health

What is disability?

Disability is generally personified with a patient in a wheelchair. But, disability is a physical or mental condition that limits a person’s physical or mental movement, senses or activities. The disability may be recognized as a substantial and long term effect on body structure and function, activity restriction and participation restriction. This may an effect the body of the patient and impaired parts but his health may or may not be affected.

Types of disability

Disability may be recognized as mental or physical impairment which is obstructing a person’s capability to carry out his routine activities. Thus, he is unable to carry out the daily routine activities as a normal person. But we cannot call him abnormal as well because everyone is different in respect of their qualities and identity. Thus, disability can be in respect of impairments of physical body or mobility, disability of spinal cord, any injury of head and even brain disability, disability of sight and vision (invisibility also), hearing disability, intellectual disability (dyslexia) and psychological problems. Thus, in all kinds of disabilities the body and health is affected in its own way thereby causing irritation and discomfort to the patient.

Effects of disability on health

Thus, when a person is disabled in any aspect, the main effect is on his mental health. He may be abandoned by his family and relatives and feel isolated and thus traumatized because of his loneliness and impairment. This may lead to mistrust and conflict in the mind of the patient. He may feel the taste of failure and continual cycle of failing without any hope of being cured may result in loss of self-esteem, confidence, motivation and frustration.

Effect on social life and self

 Disable people are generally viewed as a sign of sympathy. They become passive receivers of care. They may have one or the other kind of disability which is chronic in nature. This may frustrate them. This is one the cause for a gaining demand of euthanasia among people. They are not able to carry the burden in a society where they are looked down upon.

Thus, the disabled person must take care of his health and prove their identity by availing of the opportunities and rights provided to them by the government. They should also use their expertise if any to make their name in this supercilious society.

Government has also framed many rights for the disabled people to safeguard their rights for their healthy living.
